Salalah is the second largest city in Oman, located in the south of the country and considered an oasis in the Middle East. The city attracts many tourists from the Gulf region especially during the Khareef, which is the rainy season. Apparently, these rains modify the deserted landscape in a green and fertile scenery, and are also responsible for the formation of seasonal waterfalls.

cidade de Omã, localizada no sul do país e considerada um oásis no Oriente
Médio. A cidade atrai muitos turistas da região do Golfo especialmente durante
o Khareef, que é a temporada de chuvas. Aparentemente, essas
chuvas modificam a paisagem deserta em um cenário verde e fértil, e também são
responsáveis pela formação de cachoeiras sazonais.
I was not there during the Khareef, which happens from June to September, I visited the city in April. Surprisingly, in one of the driest times of the year, we found a landscape still quite green compared to the UAE, and located only 1 h and 20 min flight from Dubai.

Khareef, que acontece de junho a setembro, visitei a cidade em
abril. Surpreendentemente, numa das épocas que seria a mais seca do ano,
encontramos uma paisagem ainda bastante verde em comparação com os Emirados
Árabes, e situada a apenas 1 h e 20 min de voo de Dubai.
We stayed at the Salalah
Beach Resort, and honestly, our experience was excellent - very affordable,
extremely clean, and located by the beach, literally. If you sleep with the
windows open, you can hear the noise of the waves crashing on the shore.
Amazing. The beach is clean, beautiful, extensive and quiet, perfect for
relaxation.
Nós ficamos no Salalah Beach Resort, e honestamente, nossa experiência foi excelente. O preco é bem acessível, o hotel é extremamente limpo, e localizado à beira da praia, literalmente. Se você dormir com as janelas abertas, vai conseguir ouvir o barulho das ondas batendo na areia. Surpreendente. A praia é limpa, linda, extensa e tranquila, perfeita para relaxar.

Queríamos explorar os wadis da região e tentar encontrar uma cachoeira se tivéssemos sorte. Na verdade, qualquer pequena fonte de água doce já faria com que o passeio valesse a pena. Infelizmente, nos disseram que seria muito difícil encontrar água na maioria dos wadis nesta época do ano, e que cachoeiras seria impossível.
Anyway, we did not give up, we set out for our
first adventure, Wadi Darbat, a beautiful valley situated in the east region of
Salalah. We did a hike for about two hours along camels, cows, a crystal clear lake full of
fish, trees, and no one around us. We could see from the marks on
the rocks along the lake that during khareef the water level is much higher
than what we experienced, and that apparently at that time of
year it is possible to rent kayaks and boats, but even without being in the
ideal season, we had a very different and special day.
De qualquer forma, não desistimos, partimos para a nossa primeira aventura, Wadi Darbat, um belo vale situado na região leste de Salalah. Nós fizemos uma caminhada por cerca de duas horas por camelos, vacas, ao longo de um lago limpíssimo cheio de peixes, árvores, e ninguém a nossa volta. Pudemos constatar pelas marcas nas rochas ao longo do lago, que durante o khareef o nível da água é muito maior do que o que experimentamos durante o nosso passeio, e que aparentemente naquela época do ano, é possivel alugar caiaques e barcos, mas mesmo sem estarmos na estacao ideal, tivemos um dia muito diferente e especial.

As we advanced through the valley, the lake became more and more shallow until the water completely disappeared from the surface. Even so we could still see that during the khareef, some seasonal waterfalls are formed in this area, and certainly the landscape must be even more exuberant.
Enquanto avançávamos pelo vale, o lago foi se tornando mais e mais raso até que a água desapareceu completamente da superfície. Mesmo assim ainda pudemos ver que, durante o khareef, são formadas algumas cachoeiras sazonais nesta área, e certamente a paisagem deve ser ainda mais exuberante.
After doing hours of hiking under a sun of at least 35 degrees, all we wanted was to find a bar with good food and preferably a cold beer. As Oman is a Muslim country, places that sell alcohol are rare, and we were suggested to visit the Oasis Club, a club where expats meet for a drink on weekends.
Depois de fazer horas de caminhada sob um sol de pelo menos 35 graus, tudo o que queríamos era encontrar um bar com boa comida e, de preferência, uma cerveja gelada. Como Oman é um país muçulmano, os lugares que vendem álcool são raros, e fomos sugeridos visitar o Oasis Club, um clube onde os expatriados se encontram para uma bebida nos finais de semana.
After some online research and a conversation in the hotel concierge, we decided to try the Ayn Sahalnoot, or Sahalnoot Spring - Excellent choice - The place is amazing. We met some local people who also refreshed themselves with their families at the lake of blue waters. Some jump off the cliff (about 6 m high) inside the crystal clear natural pool. We had a good afternoon there, in a completely different landscape from everything we are accustomed to. It was worth the visit.
Depois de algumas pesquisas on-line e uma conversa no concierge do hotel, decidimos tentar o Ayn Sahalnoot, ou Sahalnoot Spring - Excelente escolha - O lugar é incrível. Encontramos alguns habitantes locais que também se refrescaram com suas famílias nesse lago de águas azuis. Alguns saltam do penhasco (cerca de 6 m de altura) dentro da piscina natural cristalina. Tivemos uma boa tarde lá, em uma paisagem completamente diferente de tudo o que estamos acostumados. Valeu a pena o passeio.
We returned to Dubai after this incredible experience and the certainty that we will visit Salalah again as the place has much more to offer. It is said that the Omani people are the most hospitable around the Middle East, and in Salalah we could experience that. Also, the temperature is very pleasant and the food is excelent. We will definitely be back soon.
Regressamos à Dubai depois desta incrível experiência e a certeza de que visitaremos Salalah de novo, já que o lugar tem muito mais a oferecer. Dizem que o povo omanense é o mais hospitaleiro do Oriente Médio e, em Salalah, comprovamos isso. Além disso, a temperatura é muito agradável e a comida é excelente. Nós definitivamente voltaremos em breve.
